High Magnetic Field Physics Group

In the research of new materials, it is extremely important to clarify the fundamental properties of materials, such as electrical, optical, and magnetic properties. While high sample quality is a fundamental requirement for this, measurement under extreme conditions such as strong magnetic fields and low temperatures is also a very powerful tool for revealing the properties of materials.
The High Magnetic Field Measurement Group is developing various "measurement techniques under high magnetic fields" to investigate the properties of new functional materials such as magnetic refrigeration materials in detail. We are also developing "high field magnets" capable of generating magnetic fields in excess of 20 Tesla, and are clarifying the unique properties of various substances and materials from multiple perspectives.

Field of Expertise/Research Subjects

(1) Research on high magnetic field generation technology

In order to generate a magnetic field stronger than 20 Tesla, the group is researching various magnetic field generation technologies, including magnets that generate a strong magnetic field instantaneously or repeatedly, called "pulse magnets," and magnets that generate a steady magnetic field, called "superconducting magnets," and their combinations. We will use these developed technologies to measure various physical properties and to demonstrate the principle of new magnetic refrigeration technologies.

(2) Development of high magnetic field property measurement technology

We are developing measurement techniques for various physical properties under high magnetic fields, such as magnetoresistance, Hall effect, and cyclotron resonance, which are necessary for research on quantum materials and semiconductor quantum structure samples, and electron spin resonance, magnetocaloric effect, and magnetostriction, which are necessary for research on magnetic materials such as magnetic spectroscopy and magnetic frozen materials.
