Processing and Characterisation of Ceramic Coatings

Abstract

The research themes of the ceramic coating group in the Materials Science Centre include novel processing and non-destructive evaluation of ceramic thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for engine applications, processing and characterisation of nuclear fuel particles, coatings for biomedical applications and synthesis of ceramic particles for fabrication of ceramic coatings. The group pioneers in developing impedance spectroscopy as a non-destructive evaluation tool to study degradation of TBCs. The group also is developing electrophoretic deposition for fabrication of TBCs on complex shape components, which is potentially useful for fabrication of ceramic coatings for other applications. Currently, the group is investigating residual stress, mechanical behaviour and microstructure change in relation to degradation of ceramic coatings, in particular, thermal barrier coatings.
