The 9th Ultra-Steel Workshop

The 9th Ultra-Steel Workshop was held at the Tsukuba International Congress Center on July 20 - 21, 2005. 235 members participated in this workshop in the midst of the intense summer heat from the early morning hours.

This year is the final year of the ultra-steel project, and discussions were held on the summary of the results that were obtained during the past 9 years along with some that involved future developments based on the workshop’s theme of “Achievements, Linkage and Bridging”.

At the plenary session that dealt with the theme of “International Trends in Steel Research and Technology”, Professor H. Dong, made a report on the steel project that is being undertaken in China. This project which is engaged in supporting the rapidly developing economy of current China gathered a large amount of attention. Kotobu Nagai, the Director-General of the Steel Research Center, followed with a summary of the ultra-steel project and made a lot of suggestions towards future developments. At the poster session, 61 presentations were made on the very latest information, and the exchange of opinions took place in each of the specialized fields. The short talk presentation corner that was established last year, where each speaker gives a 2 minute outline of the presentation, was well received. The participants felt that it was possible to understand the contents of many presentations in a short period of time by this method.

The banquet featured a special lecture meeting with a horn performance. The horn player used a gentle mouth piece made of nickel free high nitrogen stainless steel which was developed at our center.  The participants appeared to be totally captivated by the beautiful sounds. Reports on the results of the ultra-steel research were made at each of the individual sessions, and a wide range of discussions involving highly specialized ones to those on technological trends on domestic and international scales were held.

In addition, to those who are interested in acquiring more details on the contents, the proceedings from this workshop are available and can be ordered from the home page.  The ultra-steel workshop provides a place where interdisciplinary discussions can be held with various people from other specialized fields. Another workshop is scheduled for next year, and we hope that you will come and participate in the upcoming discussions.
