Advanced neutron diffraction for functional materials
講演要旨
Neutron diffraction has delivered many insights to the structure of complex materials owing to the almost randomly varying neutron scattering lengths as a function of atomic number, allowing for instance, strong contrast between neighbouring elements, isotopic substitution, etc… Additionally, ever since the pioneering work on MnO of Shull et al in 1949, neutron diffraction has long established itself as the key experiment to determine the magnetic structure of magnetic materials. However, neutron scattering is essentially a flux limited technique and has therefore being associated with the need for rather large samples. In this talk, I will review some recent developments in neutron instrumentation and sample environment which have enabled cutting edge experiments to be performed on functional materials and/or small samples. Scientific examples will be taken in the fields of complex magnetic structures, multiferroics, thin film magnetism and Molecular Organic Frameworks.
