On January 26, 2026, Taiyo Maeda and Dr. Toshio Osada of the Research Center for Structural Materials (RCSM), National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), together with Prof. Shingo Ozaki of Yokohama National University, received the Engineering Ceramics Division Best Poster Award: Second Place at the 49th International Conference and Expo on Advanced Ceramics and Composites (ICACC2025) organized by the American Ceramic Society.

ICACC2025 The Engineering Ceramics Division Best Poster Award: Second Place

Presentation Title
Prediction of size dependency of strength scatter in ceramics using extreme value statistics for defect distribution

Awardees
Taiyo Maeda (Yokohama National University / High Reliability Heat-Resistant Materials Group, Materials Processing Unit, Research Center for Structural Materials, NIMS)
Dr. Toshio Osada (High Reliability Heat-Resistant Materials Group, Materials Processing Unit, Research Center for Structural Materials, NIMS)
Prof. Shingo Ozaki (Yokohama National University)

This award recognizes outstanding poster presentations at the 49th International Conference and Expo on Advanced Ceramics and Composites (ICACC2025), and the awarded work received Second Place in the competition.
In this study, an extreme value statistical model was applied to analyze internal defect distributions, enabling prediction of the size dependency of strength scatter in ceramics. The poster presentation received high evaluation from the conference committee.
Among approximately 160 poster presentations, this work was the only award-winning presentation from Asia.
