Abstract:
High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) were originally conceived as multicomponent alloys with equiatomic or near-equiatomic compositions [1]. Despite their concentrated alloy chemistry, several early-investigated HEAs, including the well-known Cantor alloy, showed the formation of solid-solution phases, presumably due to their large configurational entropy [1]. HEAs evoked phenomenal research interest as a new class of materials, and subsequently, the scope of HEAs was expanded to explore the massive composition space for developing compositionally complex alloys (CCAs) with novel mechanical properties [2, 3].
Dual-phase HEAs with a combination of hard and soft phases are particularly attractive for tailoring microstructure and mechanical properties via thermo-mechanical processing. In the present talk, we will try to highlight the possibilities of tailoring microstructures and mechanical properties of different classes of dual-phase HEAs, including lamellar (L12+B2) eutectic HEAs (EHEAs), (FCC+Laves), and finally (FCC1+FCC2) phase-separated HEAs (PS-HEAs). We have shown that dual-phase HEAs are highly amenable to microstructural engineering; potentially enabling remarkable micro/nanostructures with outstanding mechanical properties. The talk also aims to highlight the intriguing scientific questions arising from these related developments and the future scope and opportunities for addressing them.
