3 It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the NIMS Award Symposium 2025.The National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) is Japan’s national research and development institute specializing in materials science. This annual symposium is one of NIMS’s most important events, celebrating excellence and innovation in the field. Through the NIMS Award, we recognize researchers whose groundbreaking work in materials science has brought transformative benefits to society. Established in 2007, the NIMS Award honors outstanding scientific achievements that have advanced materials research and contributed to social progress. The NIMS Award 2025 is presented to three distinguished scientists for their remarkable contributions to the development and practical application of perovskite solar cells. Professor Tsutomu Miyasaka of Toin University of Yokohama invented a new type of solar cell that uses lead halide perovskite semiconductors. Professor Henry J. Snaith of the University of Oxford and Professor Nam-Gyu Park of Sungkyunkwan University advanced the field by developing solid-state perovskite solar cells using the organic semiconductor Spiro-MeOTAD as the hole transport layer. This innovation addressed the stability issues of earlier devices, achieved high efficiency, and brought the technology closer to practical use. This year’s symposium is organized under the theme “Advanced Energy Materials & Technologies to Shape Our Sustainable Future,” with a special focus on perovskite solar cells. Research on perovskite solar cells is now being pursued worldwide to address global energy and societal challenges. NIMS has also been actively engaged in advancing these next-generation renewable energy technologies, which offer great potential for high conversion efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability. By hosting this symposium, we hope to inspire young researchers to drive further innovation in perovskite solar cell technology.I would like to express my sincere appreciation to our awardees for their outstanding contributions, and to all invited speakers and participants for joining us. I hope that this symposium will inspire valuable discussions, encourage collaboration, and generate new ideas that advance the frontiers of materials science. On behalf of NIMS, I wish you all a rewarding and memorable experience.Kazuhiro HonoPresident, NIMSGreetings from President
