
Skyrmions and their annihilation in Co/Ru and Fe3GeTe2

Abstract:
We discuss two special cases of skyrmions and their annihilation i) in monolayer films without anisotropy and ii) in bulk samples without DMI. We used low-temperature spin-polarized STM to study the skyrmion structure and transition region with nm spatial resolution. In both cases, skyrmions are metastable at zero magnetic field protected by their topological charge and become unstable and collapse at finite magnetic fields. We discuss, how the dipolar energy of the skyrmion core plays a major role in the stabilization.
