Abstract:

It has been long suggested that the grain size limit of HAMR granular media is around 5 nm, potentially enabling an ADC of around 5 Tfcpsi. HAMR writer and reader size reduction are also dependent upon design and process invention, the limits of which are not yet known. To overcome the grain size limit, ordered or patterned media have been proposed as successors to conventional granular media. Ordered and patterned media tend to relax the writer requirements at any particular ADC, due to the geometric regularity of the media structure. This talk will go into the details of these and other advanced media structures, as well as system architectures, which are currently being considered as candidates for high areal density HAMR products, and our current understanding of the ADC entitlement of these technologies.
