  1. Self-assembly of small molecules. Supramolecular synthesis of molecular arrays in various media including solution or at surfaces. Highlights: (a) preparation of self-assembled nanotubes with large aspect ratio and monodisperse cross-sectional diameter; (b) control of surface assembly using molecular oxidation state or hydrogen bonding.

  2. Chemistry of non-planar tetrapyrroles. Certain tetrapyrroles (porphyrins) can be synthetically manipulated through the usually inaccessible central nitrogen atoms permitting modulation of their properties. Highlights: (a) chromogenic sensing of anions; (b) poly-tautomerism in novel corrole derivatives.

  3. Nanomaterials from coordination complexes of transition elements. Coordination complexes of transition metal cations can be processed by a variety of means into materials with nanoscale structural features. Highlights: (a) thermolytic processing of dinuclear complexes of iron; (b) nanostructured microspheres of manganese oxide by room temperature solution processing.
