Biography
James Hone is Wang Fong-Jen Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Columbia University. He received his BS in physics from Yale in 1990, and PhD in experimental condensed matter physics from UC Berkeley in 1998. He did postdoctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania and Caltech, where he was a Millikan Fellow, and joined the Columbia faculty in 2003. Prof. Hone served as Director of Columbia’s Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) from 2014-2021, and as Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 2021-2024. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the recipient of the McGroddy Prize for New Materials from APS.
Abstract
High-quality 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures are a powerful platform for realizing new architectures for quantum circuits. This talk will describe our work in XX areas: 1. Measuring properties of 2D materials using high-Q superconducting resonators; 2. Achieving highly tunable vertical Josephson junctions with 2D superconductors and semiconductors; 3. Utilizing 2D heterostructures to realize ultra-compact superconducting qubits; and 4. Using sensitive measurements of kinetic inductance to probe superconductivity in novel 2D materials.
