Research Environment and Support Systems
ICYS maintains an international environment where foreign researchers can focus on their work free of language barriers.
1. Research funds
ICYS funds research expenses so that researchers are free to conduct research based on their own ideas. They can also participate in academic conferences and pursue collaboration with domestic and overseas researchers as they wish.
2. Mentor system
The mentor system enables talented NIMS researchers to guide ICYS researchers in their research while ensuring maximum respect of the independence of the latter. Talented researchers from around the world participate as mentors.

3. Support
Support staff provides assistance with English-language issues.
Technical support
Specialized technicians provide technical support for shared equipment such as the facility’s electron microscope. ICYS offers a range of other support geared to enable researchers to conduct their research independently, including assistance with the drafting of patent applications and outside funding proposals.
Clerical support
A clerical staff with excellent English skills provides assistance with a range of NIMS clerical, purchasing, and other procedures. Researchers can also make use of the main NIMS support system to help them get acclimated to life in Japan, deal with emergencies, and obtain other assistance as needed.
