Providing state-of-the-art shared infrastructure to support research and development of next-generation storage batteries

2024.01.01 Update

The NIMS Battery Research Platform is a world-class facility for next-generation battery R&D covering everything from battery cell assembly to materials analysis. All the equipment is installed under one roof in the NanoGREEN Building at the Namiki site.

A super-dry rooms and glove boxes are installed to realize the ultra-low humidity environment essential for research and development of storage batteries, and cell prototyping and evaluation can be freely performed. And also infrared/Raman spectrometers, small scanning electron microscopes, laser microscopes, etc. are installed in the dry room, making it possible to perform simple analysis and evaluation.

The state-of-the-art equipment includes transmission and scanning electron microscopes equipped with various X-ray spectrometers, large-scale analysis equipment includes focused ion beam scanning electron microscopes, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Auger electron spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction, gas/liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, etc., enabling multimodal analysis of various physical and chemical phenomena occurring inside storage batteries. And, since many samples contain highly reactive lithium-related substances, in order to realize measurement under low damage conditions as well as transporting samples without exposure to the atmosphere, we have developed special attachments and developed our own basic technology.
