NIMS’s unique system helps active research of talented young scientists from all over the world

2023.12.20 Update
ICYS (International Center for Young Scientists) is launched in 2003 as a new organization of NIMS in succession to "International Center for Young Scientists" with the support of Special Coordination Funds for promoting Science and Technology, a program administrated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. In a unique environment represented by "In4" (International, Interdisciplinary, Independent, Innovative), ICYS Research Fellows (ICYS-RF) conduct highly independent research under the guidance of two mentor researchers while utilizing advanced research facilities at NIMS.
The mission of an ICYS-RF is to pursue independent research based on their original innovative idea. So, the ICYS-RFs have to set the goal for their research and make the research plan by themselves to achieve best possible results. This is an important difference from usual post-doc researchers hired for specific research projects. All management and scientific discussions will be conducted in English. A research grant of 2 million yen per year will be provided to each ICYS-RF.

Annual salary: \ 6 million - (highest rank in Japan)
Contract term*: Initially 3 years, renewed up to 5 years based on annual evaluation.
*If the applicant is already in NIMS as a non-permanent researcher (Post doc et al.), the maximum contract term depends on work experience at NIMS.

Advantage is given when applying to NIMS permanent researcher position.
We have recruiting in September and March every year.
All applicants must have obtained a PhD degree within the last 10 years.

So far, we received applications from over 90 countries and accepted researchers from 30 countries. After the ICYS, a number of the fellows obtained tenure researcher positions in NIMS or found faculty positions in top-ranked universities, research institutes as well as companies world-wide.

ICYS will continue to foster leading materials scientists for the next generation.
