High Magnetic Field Measurement Group

It is very important to clarify basic material properties, such as electric, optical and magnetic properties, in the material research. Extreme physical measurements under high magnetic fields and low temperatures are the very powerful tools for investigating the material properties, and enable us to find out new physical phenomena in solids.
“High Magnetic Field Measurement Group” has aimed to develop special measurement techniques under extreme conditions in order to study material properties and new functions in various attractive functional materials. We have also developed "high field magnets" that can generate high magnetic fields exceeding 20 Tesla.

Research subject

1. Research on high magnetic field generation technology

In order to generate high magnetic fields over 20 Tesla, our group has developed pulsed magnet systems, which can generate the very high magnetic field above 20 Tesla within a short duration time. The developed systems have been used for various types of the material research in NIMS. We have also planned to use the magnet system for demonstrating the advanced magnetic refrigeration.


2. Development of advanced measurement technology under high magnetic fields

We have developed measurement techniques to clarify various material properties in solids by using high magnetic fields over 20 Tesla, such as  magnetization, magneto-striction, electron spin resonance, magneto-caloric effect for research of magnetic materials such as
  1. magnetization, magneto-striction, electron spin resonance, magneto-caloric effect for research of magnetic materials such as magnetic refrigeration materials,
  2. magneto-resistance, Hall effect, cyclotron resonance and magneto-spectroscopy for research of attractive functional materials.
