Director's Greeting

Research Center for Structural Materials (RCSM) is the largest public research organization in Japan that mainly specializes in structural materials, and is one of the largest in the world. The RCSM was originally established in 2014, and the 5th medium- to long-term plan started in April 2023. We promote research activities including materials creation and evaluation that tribute to the national resilience and carbon neutrality. In the creation task, we aim to develop structural materials that can withstand extreme environments and conditions such as cryogenic temperatures, super high temperatures, and huge earthquakes. In the evaluation topic, we work on technology development such as quantitative prediction by multi-scale measurement and computational science in order to fundamentally clarify the mechanism of the properties. In addition, we actively promote industry-academia-government collaboration under the slogan of “a basic research institute for industry.” The cutting-edge research facilities are open to the public, and diverse specialists work to provide comprehensive solutions to all material issues. We actively accept young researchers, graduate students, and students from companies, universities, and technical colleges, and develop educational activities, including recurrent education. Furthermore, we further promote material specifications and standardization and accident investigations that are unique to public institutions, contributing to the reduction of social infrastructure disasters that directly affect human lives. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in the activities of the NIMS Research Center for Structural Materials.

Takahito Ohmura, Director
