The National Institute for Materials Science (President: Sukekatsu Ushioda) is engaged in activities to improve data on the atmospheric corrosion properties of low alloy steels in atmospheric environments. As a result of these efforts, NIMS issued the following two Corrosion Data Sheets on March 31, 2011.
- "CORROSION DATA SHEET No. 3B
Data Sheet on Atmospheric Corrosion Properties of Carbon Steels and Weathering Steels"
- "CORROSION DATA SHEET No. 5
Data Sheet on Atmospheric Corrosion Properties of Carbon Steels in Short Cycle Repeated Exposure"
This activity is being carried out as part of efforts by NIMS to improve the intellectual infrastructure under its 2nd Five-Year Plan (FY2006-FY2010). NIMS has achieved a number of important results to date, such as clarification of the effects of the main alloy components in weathering steels on corrosion resistance.
In the future, NIMS plans to issue Data Sheets in connection with basic data for standardization of sheltered exposure tests.
