3D analysis of magnetic domain structure inside permanent magnets becomes possible.

~Toward understanding the coercivity mechanism~

We succeeded in observing the 3D magnetic domain structure of an advanced high-coercivity Nd-Fe-B based permanent magnet using a hard X-ray magnetic tomography technique. SEM tomography observation was also employed to correlate the revealed 3D magnetic domains and the microstructure. This new technique opens up a new horizon in understanding the coercivity mechanism of the permanent magnets. This achievement is based on collaboration with Tohoku Univ., Kansei Gakuin Univ., JASRI, Daido Steel Co. and NIMS(A. Bolyachkin, H. Sepehri-Amin, T. Ohkubo, K. Hono)
