The Japan-US Information Exchange Seminar on Fundamentals of Next Generation Batteries was held on March 16 and 17, 2023, at the Auditorium on the 1st floor of the NanoGREEN/WPI-MANA building in the NIMS Namiki Site. Both Japan and the United States are leading countries in basic science research on next-generation rechargeable batteries, and national projects have been continuously conducted in both countries. Most recently, JCESR, supported by DOE, and ALCA-SPRING, supported by JST/MEXT, have been underway since 2012 and 2013, respectively, and both are in their final stages.
The workshop aimed to build a strong network of researchers from both countries, bringing together leading researchers from both countries to share the latest research findings and discuss future directions. The intent is to maintain and enhance the leading role of both countries, especially among young researchers. From the U.S., Dr. Harriet Kung, Deputy Director of the DOE Office of Science, and three others, and 12 leading researchers from universities and national laboratories visited NIMS. From Japan, more than 50 scientists from ALCA-SPRING participated in the workshop. During the two-day workshop, 24 oral presentations and 29 poster presentations were made, and active exchanges between Japanese and U.S. researchers took place.
From NIMS,
Kohei Uosaki (NIMS Fellow) presided over the meeting.
Kazunori Takada (GREEN Director) and
Yoshitaka Tateyama (GREEN Deputy Director), gave oral presentations.
Takuya Masuda (GREEN Deputy Director),
Keitaro Sodeyama,
Naoaki Kuwata,
Kei Nishikawa,
Shoichi Matsuda and
Toshihiko Mandai participated in poster sessions.
A proposal was made to hold such information exchange seminars every other year, alternating between Japan and the United States. Discussions were also enlivened by the desire to invigorate the exchange of people. It is hoped that close collaboration between researchers in both countries will accelerate research on next-generation rechargeable batteries.
