Ecomaterials Center was inaugurated in NIMS at April 2002. "Ecomaterials", which this center was named after, is considered as a material solution to global environment issues. It is said that the 21st century is the century of environment. The world is moving towards "sustainable society"; where harmony with environment is sought by way of implementation of Kyoto Protocol such as CO₂ gas reduction etc., and World Summit on Sustainable Development at Johannesburg in September 2002. Holding up ecomaterials as a solution and to contribute to global environmental issues clearly and concretely, this center is taken the first and big step forward to network material technology for sustainability.
