The Steel Research Center at NIMS and the Materials Information Technology Station signed a memorandum on research cooperation with Staatliche Materialprüfungsanstalt Universität (MPA) Stuttgart , on October 11, 2002.

The contents of this memorandum specified that exchanging researchers and conducting workshops on common themes are fundamental to the promotion of international exchange in the fields of advanced steel materials research and material reliability research. MPA-NIMS workshop on 9-12Cr ferrite steel for power generation was held on October 10 and 11 at MPA prior to the signing of this memorandum.

Approximately 30 presentations and active discussions (10 from NIMS) were held on the development of advanced heat-resistant steels and the evaluation and the prediction of the life span of prolonged creep strength on heat-resistant steels used in plants. This was the third workshop, following the first one in March 2000 at MPA and the second one in March 2001 at NIMS. Approximately 100 researchers from 14 countries including Germany, Japan and England participated in this workshop.

The fourth workshop is planned for around March 2004 at NIMS. If progress is made on the exchange of research centering on the two organizations, the alliance and cooperation on materials research with European countries is expected to develop considerably, not only for heat-resistant steels but also for other structural materials.
