The Steels Research Center invited Prof. Zhiling Tian, Vice President and Dr.Han Dong, General Director of CISRI to NIMS for the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing ceremony on May 22 during ICASS. The two of them along with Dr. Kotobu Nagai, Director-General of the Steel Research Center, and Dr.Kaneaki Tsuzaki, Deputy Director-General of the center, placed their signatures on MOU. Dr. Yuqing Weng, President of The Chinese Society for Metals and Dr.Tetsuya Saito, Vice President of NIMS, were also present at the ceremony as observers.

Preliminary negotiations for MOU were held in early April with Dr.Teruo Kishi, President of NIMS, as the leader when he visited CISRI. A basic agreement was also made with Dr. Gan Yong, President of CISRI, beforehand, so the signing ceremony was completed in a friendly setting. The content of the agreement included promoting visits on both sides, exchanging talented people, and the planning and supporting of international conferences with a common theme to expedite the exchange of research results concerning steels to both countries and also worldwide.

Based on this agreement, the planning for the workshop on materials for automobiles in Shanghai for this autumn has already begun. The agreement is also believed to be one of the important foundations for the success of the second ICASS, which will be held in Shanghai, 2004. If the joint efforts from both sides can combine their results, we can expect major developments from the materials research community involving the East Asian countries of China and Japan , and Korea as well.

*MOU is an abbreviation for Memorandum of Understanding
