Our main support will be nano structure analysis and characterization using solid state NMR.
The station will provide sixteen high-field magnet systems as common facilities. Of those facilities, the core of our support will center around six solid state NMR. We will provide six solid state NMR. Those NMR are 930MHz (Operating with strongest magnetic field for high resolution solid state NMR in the world), 500MHz, 400MHz, 500MHz (broad-line NMR), and 270MHz. The NMR is expected to be very useful and complement mutually with electron microscope.
The merit of NMR is that even amorphous materials and mixtures can be measured selectively at their function expression site in nano scale, precisely characterizing their three dimensional structures and dynamic natures. Conventional measurement by NMR was limited to liquid solutions and only to hydrogen and carbon which have advantage in sensitivity and resolution. Many important elements are quadrupolar nuclei but were not subjected to the measurement by NMR because of insufficient resolution due to low magnetic field. With strong magnetic field providing sufficient resolution, high resolution measurement of those elements is now a reality.
High Magnetic Field Station
High Magnetic Field Station will contribute to the development of nano materials and structures with high level analytical techniques in the top class superstrong magnetic environment by using various structure analysis and characterization systems.
