The International Center for Young Scientists (ICYS) of the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) is now seeking a few researchers. Successful applicants are expected to pursue innovative research on broad aspects of materials science using most advanced facilities in NIMS. Please refer to the NIMS website for detailed information on the research environment in NIMS.

In the ICYS, we offer a special environment that enables young scientists to work independently based on their own idea and initiatives. All management and scientific discussions will be conducted in English. An annual salary 5.35 million yen (level of 2016) will be offered depending on qualifications and experience. In addition, research grant of 2 million yen per year will be supplied to each ICYS researcher. The initial contract term is two years and may be extended by one more year depending on the person's performance.

All applicants must have obtained a PhD degree within the last ten years.

Guide for Application Form


The objectives, background and plan of your research should be described within 7,000 letters including spaces. (Attach figures as a separate file.)
State the broad long-term objectives and describe concisely and realistically what the specific research described in this application is intended to accomplish.
Outline the experimental design and/or the procedures to be used to accomplish the specific aims of the project. Where appropriate, describe any new methodology and its advantage over existing methodologies. Discuss potential difficulties and limitations of proposed procedures and alternative approaches, where feasible, to achieve the aims. Provide a tentative sequence or timetable for the investigation.


Please position your proposed research in your discipline or field of research in terms of quality, novelty, significance, etc. within 2,000 letters including spaces.


Specify the need for particular facilities or instruments which the NIMS may have available or may be able to provide for the purpose of the ICYS researcher. These might include items such as access to a supercomputer. It is recommended that candidates state the infrastructure required for their research.


State whether you are acquainted with any researcher at NIMS and/or have any specific researcher at NIMS whom you would like to work with.


Because NIMS is wide spread geographically and in research area, the ICYS researchers are located at several stations;

You can express your preference in station depending on your proposed research area. There are overlaps in research areas at different stations and if you are not familiar with NIMS activities, we will assist you in finding the right station.
