| PR meeting on the achievement of the project supported by Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology has been held on March 25, 2006 at Miraikan, Tokyo. Progress of 13 projects of “Program for Promoting Establishment of Strategic Research Centers” subsidized by the MEXT was presented. Professor Bando, Director-General of the ICYS lectured recent progress of ICYS project. Policy, current status and research results of the ICYS were also demonstrated by poster presentation. |

On December 1, 2005, the second ICYS symposium was held at Tsukuba international Congress Center. Yoji Totsuka, Director General, High Energy accelerator Research organization, delivered the keynote lecture. Between the symposium lectures, 30 ICYS research fellows gave presentations with posters and actively discussed with participants. The number of participants reached 178. December 1, 2005

"NIMS/ICYS School" was began as an attempt to offer new course, in which university faculties achieving significant results will lecture on the scientific information that will lead in the new era of their research field. Attendees are able to acquire systematic knowledge from fundamental to leading-edge research achievement. This will be a good opportunity for young researchers to broaden their perspectives and learn new approach in the field of nano-scale materials science. The title of the first lecture was "Atomic Scale Control of the Electronic Structure at Oxide Heterointerfaces" and a lecturer was Associate Professor Harold Y. Hwang*, Department of Advanced Materials Science, Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, The University of Tokyo. November 10-, 2005

| The 2nd ICYS Evaluation Committee Meeting was held in Tsukuba on August 3, 2005. This evaluation committee was an internal organization which deliberates matters related to the evalutation of the management and research activities of ICYS. Professor Ikoma as chairperson, and five committee members attended the meeting. First, Professor Bando, ICYS Director-General, made a report on ICYS policy and activities. Then, ICYS research fellows and an advisor presented comments about their research activities and the research environment at ICYS. Many questions and comments were made by the committee members. After considerable discussion, they have evaluated the achievement of ICYS as above A. |

Prof. Sir Harry W. Kroto, ICYS Executive Advisor and 1996 Nobel Prize winner for chemistry for the discovery of fullerene (C60), visited ICYS on April 28, 2005.
Prof. Kroto had one-on-one discussions with eight ICYS research fellows about their research works.
Prof. Kroto and Prof. Cheetham joined ICYS coffee break and talked with ICYS research fellows.

ICYS Workshop was held on March 2nd through 4th
at Toray Human Resources Development Center in Mishima city, Shizuoka.
All researchers working at ICYS stayed in one place,
presented their research achievements and stimulated each other.
Furthermore distinguished speakers were invited to present their recent research results and to join in discussions with the ICYS Research Fellows.
This made the workshop more productive.
55 papers were presented in oral or poster presentation.
In addition, a "General discussion" was arranged and very active discussions
concerning promotion and future goal of the ICYS project occurred.
