The International Center for Young Scientists (ICYS) program of the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) will be terminated in March, 2008. However, as it has already been announced, the NIMS will maintain the same ICYS features since this scheme has been proved to be very efficient to achieve the original goals of the project such as internationalization and ensuring and fostering young scientists.
Recently, the NIMS has decided to establish two organizations, ICYS-MANA and ICYS-IMAT at Namiki and Sengen sites, respectively, to inherit and develop the concept of the ICYS.

What is ICYS-MANA?

MANA stands for “WPI Research Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics,” which was established on October 1, 2007 based on MEXT’s “World Premier International Research Center (WPI) Initiative” program. The purpose of this program is to establish "visible" research centers with the world’s most talented researchers in order to continuously produce outstanding research results and to foster promising young researchers. The MANA project proposed by NIMS is one of five organizations selected by MEXT for this program, and will have a life of at least 10 years. The ICYS-MANA has been organized in MANA to continue and develop the concept of the ICYS. As in the ICYS, talented young multinational researchers will gather to conduct independent research in a “melting pot” environment mixing different research fields and cultures. In MANA, 22 principal investigators (14 Japanese and 7 foreigners) with excellent abilities and careers are conducting cutting-edge research in materials science. These scientists will serve as mentors to ICYS-MANA researchers, based on a principle of respect for young researchers’ ideas.
Nanotechnology and Nanomaterials are the central issue of the MANA. However, the MANA covers wider area of materials science and will accept researchers not only of nanotechnology and nanomaterials but of various fields if they are excellent. |

What is ICYS-IMAT?
NIMS has decided to establish the ICYS-IMAT program at its Sengen Site as one immediate successor to the present ICYS project. ”IMAT” is an abbreviation for “Interdisciplinary MATerials Research.” The ICYS-IMAT program is scheduled to start in fiscal year 2008, immediately following the termination of the present ICYS project funded by MEXT.
Postdoctoral scientists who wish to join the ICYS-IMAT program at the NIMS are invited to apply for positions as The ICYS-IMAT researchers. They are expected to pursue various aspects of interdisciplinary materials researches in close collaboration with NIMS Mentor Researchers. 16 outstanding researchers at NIMS are ready to play the role of scientific mentors. The office of ICYS-IMAT is located at the Sengen site, close to the center of Tsukuba Science City. |
