Super High Efficiency Solar Cells Group

Our target is to demonstrate novel solar cells with high efficiency by utilizing crystal growth technology. We focus on intermediate band solar cells in which the efficiency is theoretically expected to be over 60 %. In this project we will study physical requirements to realize high efficiency and develop basic technologies such as crystal growth of semiconductor nanostructures.

Specialized Research Field

We have been doing two approaches on intermediate band solar cells: (1) fabrication of stacked quantum dot structure in the GaAs/AlGaAs lattice-matched system, (2) research on how solar cell performance is affected by coupling of electronic states. In this mid-term plan, we will perform basic research aiming for realizing IBSCs, i.e., research on absorption of sub-band gap photons, transport of carriers in nanostructures, fabrication of coupled quantum dot structure.
