Q1-1 What kind of graduate school is the Doctoral Program in Materials Science and Engineering? What are its particular characteristics?
NIMS and the University of Tsukuba established the Doctoral Program in Materials Science and Engineering in order to foster the development of highly professional scientists. The main campus is located in NIMS, and the professors are all NIMS first-class researchers. Using state-of-the-art facilities at the NIMS laboratory, students work on in cutting-edge research activities, prepare their thesis and have the opportunity to engage in on-the-job training in research projects. In other words, we are the best place to come for professional scientists looking to work in the field of materials science and engineering in the future.

Q1-2 What kind of qualification does the Doctoral Program in Materials Science and Engineering (DPMSE) offer?
The DPMSE offers a Ph.D in Engineering.

Q1-3 How many laboratories are available under the DPMSE?
At present, twenty six laboratories and twenty seven professors.

Q1-4 Where can I obtain up-to-date information on the DPMSE laboratories?
Each of the laboratories has its own home page and provides information on the latest activities. Please visit the DPMSE home page at http://www.nims.go.jp/graduate/

Q1-5 Does DPMSE offer Master's programs?
No, DPMSE offers only graduate programs leading to the degree of Doctor. However, there is also the Former Doctoral Program. For those who want to be guided by NIMS researchers in the two-year Master program and want to study subsequently in the three-year DPMSE after acquiring their master degree, there are Materials Science and Engineering courses in the four graduate fields of PAS of UT; Chemistly, Frontier Science, Applied Physics and Materials Science. We call them 'Master's Course in Materials Science and Engineering'. Even if the fields are different, all of the students receive guidance from NIMS researchers.

Q1-6 What is the difference between the Master's Course in Materials Science and Engineering and other courses of PAS of UT?
The students of Master's Course in Materials Science and Engineering belong to the NIMS laboratory and NIMS researchers become their guidance professors. Students of the other courses belong to the main campus of the University of Tsukuba.

Q1-7 How do students choose one of the four graduate fields of PAS of UT that make up the Master's Course in Materials Science and Engineering?
This is automatically determined by the research field of the supervising professor. Please check and confirm the details in the application guide.

Q1-8 Is it possible to enter the DPMSE after studying in other two-year courses of PAS of UT? Is it possible to enter courses of PAS of UT after the Master's Course in Materials Science and Engineering?
Both are possible provided that the proposed supervising professor agrees to the student's entrance and DPMSE also gives its approval. Please consult with the proposed supervising professor.

Q1-9 If there is a gap between foreign students entering school before and after passing the entrance examination, is it possible under DPMSE to stay in Japan as a research student during this time interval?
It is possible, but there are deadlines; If the month of entry as a research student is April, the application period is September. If the month of entry is September, the application period is April. However, before proceeding with the above procedure, prospective research students have to apply for DPMSE or obtain entry approval. Even when an applicant has his/her entry rejected a research student, it is still possible to become a NIMS foreign researcher. In such a case, please consult with your proposed supervising professor.

Q1-10 What is NIMS?
The National Institute for Materials Science, or NIMS (http://www.nims.go.jp/),is one of the core research units in Japan, and was established in April 2001 by merging two existing research institutions, the National Research Institute for Metals and the National Institute for Research in Inorganic Materials. It conducts research and development work in a comprehensive manner, including basic research not only in metals and inorganic material science/technology, but also in nanomaterials and biomaterials, which are in high demand today.

Q1-11 How may campuses does NIMS have?

NIMS has four campuses.Three are in Tsukuba city—the Sengen site, Namiki site, and Sakura site. The other is in Meguro, Tokyo. In these three campuses, DPMSE offer its programs. Students of DPMSE have permission to enter any of the campuses.
Sengen site: 1-2-1 Sengen, Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan
Namiki site: 1-1 Namiki, Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan
Sakura site: 3-13 Sakura, Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan
Meguro site: Nakameguro 2-2-54, Meguro, Tokyo, Japan

Q1-12 What is the association between NIMS and the University of Tsukuba?
NIMS and the University of Tsukuba cooperate intimately in the DPMSE program both in the Master's Course in Materials Science and Engineering and the later three-year DPMSE. Besides that, many laboratories exchange their resources in direct laboratory-based cooperation. Both organizations have the same intention of becoming one of the global centers of research and education, utilizing the advantage of Tsukuba Science City and its young vitality.

Q1-13 How does DPMSE differ from ordinary graduate school? Are there any disadvantages?

The DPMSE is a new type of graduate school, which fosters the development of highly professional scientists and pursues cutting-edge research in materials science and engineering. Students will take part in some of the research projects and will experience being at the forefront of R&D activity.

While you may gain the impression from the above that DPMSE lacks some aspects of basic education and excessively favors application research, this is not true since DPMSE students in the Advanced MSE courses take classes at the University of Tsukuba and also their supervising professor will make a point of focusing on basic research and recommend that students select relevant subjects. On the other hand, it may prove difficult for students to digest advanced subjects or to handle the state-of-the-art facilities. DPMSE students will need to apply themselves to their studies and persevere.
