Applications of frequency conversion
We are focusing on a technique that a light from exsisting advanced llight source as a pomp light is converted as well as lithium niobate, lithium tantalate, fluoride ferroelectrics and quartz as optical materials for frequency conversion. Our aim is to get "Ultra-Rainbow" from UV region to IR region by forming periodically polled structure on the above optical materials.
Stoichiometric lithium niobate/lithium tantalate
Method for growing oxide single crystal
We have developed an apparatus for growing oxide single crystal with the automatic powder supply system and double crucible. The single crystal is grown from the melt in the inner crucible and the raw material powder as much as the grown single crystal is supplied to the outer crucible automatically. The level of melt in the double crucibles is constant. Even if the composition of an oxide single crystal to be grown is varying from that of melt in the double crucible, the oxide single crystal with uniform composition can be obtained from the above apparatus.

We have succeeded in growing stoichiometric lithium niobate(SLN)/lithium tantalate(SLT) single crystals using the above apparatus. We found that SLN and SLT improve electrooptic coefficient up to 10-30 % and decrease coerceive field by 80-90 % compared with congruent lithium niobate(CLN)/lithium tantalate(CLT). We have researched and developed frequency conversion device using SLN/SLT single crystals.
高出力緑色レーザ用波長変換デバイス
We have developed a frequency conversion device using SLT, which is 1 mm bulk-type and has periodically poled structure with 8 um period. The device has attained 4.4W high power for green light, which is necessary for laser display.
高出力近・赤外領域用SLT波長変換デバイス
We have developed High Power SLT frequency conversion device for IR. The average output power is 10 W. The device is 2 mm x 2mm rod type and has periodically poled structure with 20-35um period. The device can frequency-convert from Nd:YAG laser of 1064nm as a pump light into a light of 1.4-2.1um and a light of 2.1-4um.

Quarz
Quartz has high transmittance in vacuum ultraviolet and high optical damage resistance. We have developed a frequency conversion device using the above quartz by artificially forming twin structure therein. The twin structure is the same structure as a periodically poled structure in a ferroelectric single crystal.
Fluoride Ferroelectric
We are focusing fluoride ferroelectric as a new material for frequency conversion in ultraviolet and IR region. We have succeeded in growin high quality BaMgF4 single crystal and SrAlF5 single crystal as well as in forming periodically poled structure therein.
