Aiming to sharpen up basic properties and to fabricate innovative multifunctional ceramics

We are conductiong research with the aim of creating functional and/or multifunctional ceramics with novel optical, electric, dielectric, magnetic, thermal, chemical and/or mechanical properties.

Managing Director
Yoshio SAKKA

The development of key ceramic components are required for IC and high precision machines, functional ceramic devices for optoelectronics, environmental ceramics, nuclear and aerospace materials, etc. In this center new functional and/or multi-functional ceramics with novel optical, electric, dielectric, thermal, chemical or mechanical properties are being developed. For this purpose, we are developing several types of nanoparticle processing originally developed at NIMS, and are investigating novel techniques of evaluation and design of grain-boundary nanostructures.

Groups

Fine Particle Processing Group

Process Group seek to fabricate 0-3-dimensional conformation structures having excellent properties and ranging from nanometer to micrometer sizes, based upon fine particle processing.

Group Leader Yoshio SAKKA
Group Member Tetsuo UCHIKOSHI Tohru S. SUZUKI Byungkoog JANG
Hideo OKUYAMA Naoto SHIRAHATA Noriyuki HIROTA

Non-Oxide Ceramics Group

We seek to develop Silicon carbide and Silicon nitride materials – as these are key materials for the semiconductor and precision-machinery industries – in addition to fabricating “environmental materials” that excel in coping with atmosphere heat as well as non-oxide ceramics that are capable of exhibiting superior toughness, high abrasion resistance and upgraded electrical properties among other overlapping functions.

Group Leader Naoto HIROSAKI
Group Member Toshiyuki NISHIMURA

Nitride Particle Group

We aim to derive new functions from properties of covalent-bonding ceramic materials like Silicon nitride, through control of their nanostructure.

Group Leader Naoto HIROSAKI
Group Member Rong-Jun XIE Takashi TAKEDA

Fine-grained Refractory Materials Group

We seek to design oxide powder nanostructures and fine-grained structures, in order to fabricate materials having a combination of maximized physical (di-electric, optical and thermal), chemical (high-temperature corrosion-resistance) or mechanical (high-temperature strength and superplasticity) properties.

Group Leader Keijiro HIRAGA
Group Member Byung-Nam KIM Koji MORITA Hidehiro YOSHIDA

Plasma Processing Group

We seek to fabricate new materials through minute control of chemical reaction behind the materials synthesis process with plasma ceramic materials, proceed with development of proprietary plasma generation methods using improved functions for ceramic materials and develop high-performance structure formation technology.

Group Leader Takamasa ISHIGAKI
Group Member Masayuki KAMEI Katsuyuki OKADA Jiguang LI

Functional Glass Group

We seek to conduct research as to methods for adding functions to glass materials and to develop functions – such as for catalysts, batteries and data storage media – through application of methods for forming thin films on glass surfaces and new glass made using combinatorial glass research system.

Group Leader Satoru INOUE
