Exploratory Nanotechnology Research Laboratory

Searching the triggers for the developments of key nanotechnologies

The laboratory is exploring new nanostructure-based functional materials through the researches on synthesis and analysis of the materials. Synthesis and analysis of various fullerene nanotubes are performed to search new functions and the high-Tc Cu-based superconductors are synthesized and investigated to develop high performance devices as a post-silicon technology.

In NIMS, the Research Centers are carrying out the projects and the 6 Exploratory Research Laboratories are running the exploratory researches. The exploratory researches are the basic researches to yield the seeds for the projects and are the starter researches for the developments of the new materials.
There are two types of approaches to the goals in the exploratory researches. One is the systematic approach in which the basic researches are piled up step by step toward the clear goal and the other is the approach driven by trials and errors based on the unique ideas of the researchers. Both the approaches are very useful for the exploratory researches and should be employed properly according to the cases. The research breakthroughs sometimes are derived from the unique ideas of the researchers, and are sometimes found out in the comprehensive experiments.
The Expoloratory Nanotechnology Research Laboratory consists 2 groups. The Laboratory is working on fullerene, nanotubes and high-Tc oxide superconductors. The important points of the laboratory supporting the exploratory researches are the arrangements of the open facilities designed for the systematic researches and of the leaders who can advice the researchers properly. In the Expoloratory Nanotechnology Research Laboratory, the NIMS common advanced facilities and the 2 expert group leaders support the researchers.
I would like to ask your kind support and encouragement for the exploratory researches and our laboratories.

Fullerene Engineering Group

We are carrying out research on combining low-level nanomaterials such as fullerene nanowhiskers and fullerene nanotubes, and further researching the structures, characteristics and applications on these combined structures.

Group Leader Kun-ichi MIYAZAWA
Group Member Takatsugu WAKAHARA

Nano Quantum Electronics Group

We are conducting foundational research as to behavior of superconductive protons and device applications thereto. Our research aim is to find device applications such as terahertz devices through direct observation of protons and research concerning Josephson junctions.
