A new approach to promoting project research at NIMS.

Project research by the “best members.”

In promoting research to solve specified problems, there have been many cases in recent years when cooperation combining the capabilities of a wide range of fields was necessary. Under the 2nd Mid-Term Program, the members of Centers and other research organizations at NIMS were directly assigned as the constituent members of research projects. Under the 3rd Mid-Term Program, this "one-to-one" correspondence between research projects and research divisions is eliminated, and a "one-to-many" composition is adopted. In other words, researchers will be able to participate in project research across divisions.

As a result, while research organizations are divided by field of specialization, research projects will be promoted by the "best members" horizontally across research departments in multiple fields of specialization. Based on this policy, under the 3rd Mid-Term Program, 19 project research topics will be studied by 3 research divisions, i.e., the "Materials for Environment, Energy and Resource Field," "Advanced Key Technologies Field," and "Nano-scale Materials Field," and one research Center, the "Element Strategy Materials Center."
