Interfacial Energy Conversion Group (was Nanoiterface group, MANA)

We are carrying out fundamental studies on the methods to construct functional phases by the assembly of atoms, molecules, and nanoclusters mainly at solid/liquid interfaces such as electrochemical atomic layer epitaxy, self-assembly, and layer-by-layer deposition and interfacial energy conversion processes such as electrocatalysis and photoelectrochemistry. We are also developing techniques to monitor
geometric, electronic, and molecular structures at solid/liquid interfaces with high lateral and time resolution in situ in real time such as scanning probe microscopy, non-linear spectroscopy, gap-mode
Raman, surface x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption fine structure, and visible pump - IR probe method.

1. Development of high performance catalysts by bottom-up method

We are developing techniques to construct alloy catalysts with perfect atomic mixing using multi-nuclear metal complexes and confined molecular catalysts by attaching metal complexes on and within molecular layers formed on metal and semiconductor surfaces. Structures of catalysts during reaction are determined by in situ electrochemical x-ray absorption fine structure and surface x-ray diffraction, visible pump - IR probe method to understand the reaction mechanism and to feedback the information for the development of novel catalysts.

2. In situ, real time monitoring of reactions at solid/liquid interfaces

We are studying water structure at electrode/electrolyte interfaces by sum frequency generation spectroscopy, carrier and electron transfer dynamics at semiconductor nanoclusters in solution, and structures of electrode and interfacial water at polymer electrolyte membrane/electrode interface.
