GREEN, a commissioned project of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology, Japan, aims at promoting nanotechnology in materials science reserach for the purpose of achieving Green Innovation in Japan. GREEN was established in October 2009 with NIMS at the core host institution. Building upon the strength of Japan in the field of nanotechnology and materials science, GREEN is engaged in fundamental research of environmental technology contributing to the creation of new materials aiming at solving environmental and energy problems in order to achieve a sustainable society with the collaboration between industries and academia.


Establishing a research center involving collaborations between industries, government and adacemia

Promoting overriding themes with an all Japan formation

GREEN challenges to establish a worldwide research center by promoting integration of different fields and collaboration of industry, government, and academia and gathering together high level nanomaterials science technologies and research potential of Japan.


Collaborations of computation, characterization and material

We focus on researches of photovoltaics, photocatslysis, rechargeable batteries, and fuel cells by taking advantage of computational theoretical analysis of surface/interface and advanced characterization techniques.


Nurturing young leaders for the future generation

We foster the promising young researchers actively for the next generation. At GREEN, young leaders themselves were assigned the responsibility of group leaders. Each floor of NanoGREEN building completed in 2012, has an open space for stimulating interactions between researchers of a variety of backgrounds under one roof.


GREEN open laboratory

Aiming to accelerate materials research for the solution of envirnmental and energy issues, GREEN invites researchers from universities and research institutes in Japan to work on the topics well linked to GREEN's mission through a public recruiting process. GREEN open-lab guest researchers have an opportunity to communicate with NIMS researchers from various fields, and jointly analyze the experimental results obtained by using the cutting-edge facilities at NIMS. This leads them to yield significant research results.
