Role of executives and departments

To realize a strong research system by clarification of division as to the roles and flexible manage

NIMS has been divided into departments: “research department”, “planning department” and “administrative department” while clarification of division as to the roles under leadership of the President has been made in order to establish a research-oriented organizational structure and enable flexible management.

NIMS President

The NIMS President is the chief executive officer controlling the overall system of NIMS who has been appointed by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and makes important decisions such as business policy or mid-term plan.

Advisory Board

NIMS has delegated an advisory board having accumulated knowledge concerning materials research, strong academic backgrounds as well as research capability from outside the organization, in order to provide straightforward opinions about the operational policies of NIMS, research advancement strategies, etc.

Auditors

Auditors are appointed by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to carry out audits on the operations of NIMS, in accordance with the provisions of article 19 of general rule act for independent administrative corporations. And if they perceive any need from the results of said audit, they can provide their opinions to the President or the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology

Vice Presidents

Vice Presidents are appointed by the President and assists him/her. NIMS has three Vice Presidents appointed — charged with the respective position of handling research, planning and administration.

Fellows

NIMS has invited fellows possessing a high quality of knowledge and experience as well as research performance, as chosen from among the NIMS research staff or from the outside. Fellows will carry out research into specific fields, guide and advise researchers in such fields, in addition to actively promoting research work thereto.

NIMS Advisor/DistinguishedAdvisor/Senior Advisor Emeritus

NIMS Advisor/Distinguished Advisor/Senior Advisor Emeritus offers advice or suggestion for important matters concerning conduction of NIMS at the President's request. The NIMS Advisor is chosen from among the former NIMS' president at the request of the President. The Senior Advisor Emeritus is chosen from among the former advisers or board members of NIMS at the request of the President. The Distinguished Advisor is appointed by the President.

Assistant to the President

Presidential aide is appointed by the President to assists his/her duties.

Senior Director of Administration

The Councillors conduct business and handle the NIMS affairs at the President’s request.

Secretary’s Office

The Secretary’s office conducts the entire secretariat work such as schedule management and preparations as well as to those queries from the outside.

Gender Equality Office

Audit Office

The Audit Office conducts audit of business activities of NIMS based on compliance with laws and regulations, and from business operation’s standpoint pursues accuracy, efficiency and effectiveness.
It clarifies various problems and provides the recommendations towards improvements as well as appropriate and effective business operations

Safety Control Office

Safety Control Office is intended to protect employee health as well as to maintain a safe and secure work environment at NIMS. It conducts management of legal relations such as those related to the handling of radiation and gas, control of hazardous materials, disaster prevention management and management for safety and health.

Research Division

The Research Division carries out fundamental research as well as generic/infrastructural R&D concerning materials science and technology. Under the operational policies of NIMS, it has been engaged in the priority R&D and seminal research work. Please refer to “Introduction to Research” for more details concerning research.

Planning Division

The Planning Division conducts, plans and executes measures as well as policies based on the requirements of an independent administrative institution under the leadership of the President. Following sections have been set up within the Planning Division.

General Affairs Division

The Administrative Department conducts administrative tasks, in the main the
back office jobs overall at NIMS; it also supports NIMS operations for
