Abstract

The National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS; President: Sukekatsu Ushioda) recently selected the winner of the NIMS Award for 2010. The Award Ceremony will be held during the NIMS Conference in July, and the recipient will be invited to present a NIMS Award Winner’s Memorial Lecture on that occasion.

The NIMS Award is presented to an individual or group who has achieved dramatic progress in science and technology related to materials in recent 10 years. In the selection process, a theme is determined each year, and top scientists from countries around the world recommend candidates based on that theme. The winner is then selected based on a strict evaluation by a committee of impartial experts.

The theme of this year’s NIMS Award and NIMS Conference is “Challenge of Nanomaterials Science – Toward Solution of Environmental and Energy Problems – .”
Based on this theme, researchers and groups which have achieved epoch-making results in the Environment and Energy Field were eligible for the NIMS Award for 2010.

At the NIMS Conference, a commemorative medal will be awarded to the winner, and the winner will be invited to present a NIMS Award Winner’s Memorial Lecture at the NIMS Conference. The aim of this program is to establish the NIMS Award as one of the world’s most prestigious international awards, which all researchers engaged in materials research will hope to win.

The winner of the NIMS Award for 2010 and an explanation of his achievements are presented in the attached document.
