UTM was founded in 1904 as the oldest technology university and is headquartered in Johor Bahru. It has produced nearly two thirds of the entire engineers in Malaysia. At its Kuala Lumpur campus there is Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), established in 2010 with a support of Japanese Government and more than twenty Japanese universities, and many Japanese professors have been involved in its curriculum there.

NIMS hosted UTM delegation in June 2013 headed by Prof. Dato’ Seri Zaini Ujang, the previous Vice-Chancellor at the time. He proposed a prospective cooperation between the two institutions during his visit to NIMS. The signing ceremony of the two agreements was held on May 28, 2014 at the Johor Bahru campus. Since this is the first comprehensive cooperation NIMS has ever established with academic institution in Malaysia, signing of the two agreements is believed not only to reinforce the existing research collaborations but also to enhance personal and academic exchanges with institutions in all Malaysia and, moreover, those in ASEAN countries through UTM.
