Scientific Information
For supporting web-based scholarly communication worldwide
MIssion and Activities
The Scientific Information Office is a new central scientific service unit responsible for the strategic planning, development and operation of the digital infrastructures necessary for providing NIMS with scientific information, and for supporting web-based scholarly communication worldwide. Our mission is to create a modern, electronic infrastructure to supply institutes with information, store data, publish research results and establish web-based scientific collaboration, while taking into account the interests of those institutes and their divisions. This includes:
- Acquisition and digitization of scientific literature
- Development of a web-based hub to facilitate communication between scientists and the dissemination of research results
- Publication of the peer-reviewed journal STAM
- Institutional repository and digital rights management
Project
Platform for Information and Communication "e-materials.net"
e-materials.net
NIMS hopes to foster an international web-based materials science community by providing a centralized web portal, e-materials.net, for scientists to interact, exchange data and develop novel ideas. This multi-functional tool is currently in beta and as such any suggestions are welcome. Current facilities include:
- Semantic associative search engine centered on materials science.
- Web functions for communication and networking among researchers and institutions.
"Science and Technology of Advanced Materials" (STAM)
STAM
– a peer-review journal as a scholarly communication forum -
NIMS, as a national research laboratory in materials science, produce a quality peer-review journal to the materials science community: STAM. This international publication features the latest in all areas of materials science, including review articles by leading experts in their field that provide timely and critical discussion of the present research status, and its likely future direction. We aim to improve the global visibility of this journal and ensure that its current level of quality is maintained.

Institutional Repository - a future goal of our digital library
A new project starting from April 2007, we plan to extract existing paper-based sources, including the older scientific literature, and convert them to a digital format, so as to allow the full gamut of modern search engine technologies full access to these sometimes overlooked sources.
