Science and Technology of Advanced Materials (STAM) is the online, open-access English language journal published by the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS). The Editorial Office of STAM is seeking a highly motivated person with a doctorate in materials science or related subjects to join the editorial team as a Reviews Editor.
 

STAM is a source of timely and in-depth information for materials scientists worldwide. The journal publishes original research papers and review articles covering areas including metals, inorganic and organic materials, biocompatible materials, and nanotechnology. In 2009 STAM’s ranking within ‘materials science and multidisciplinary research’ journals rose to 36 out of 212; establishing STAM as the highest ranking journal specializing in materials science published in Japan. Main Duties of the Reviews Editor

  • Pre-screening manuscripts, coordinating the review process between handling editors, reviewers, and authors.
  • Copy editing the main contents and citations list of manuscripts.
  • Identifying topics suitable for publication in STAM and the development of high quality content for STAM Focus Issues.
  • Developing networks by participating in academic conferences.
  • Working closely with the Editor, co-Editor, and Publishing Director to devise and implement strategic projects for the journal.
  • Writing
    1. Producing content for monthly newsletters for the STAM Editorial Board.
    2. Writing summaries and press releases about high impact articles published in STAM—in Japanese for readers in Japan, and in English for overseas news media.
Requirement

  • Candidates must have a doctorate in materials science or related subjects and experience of working in a research environment.
  •  Excellent written and oral communication skills in both English and Japanese.
  •  Firsthand experience of copy editing and proofreading content for science-related magazines or journals.
  •  Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and experience of working in a web-based environment.

Starting date June 2011 (negotiable)
Employment term A one year contract, renewable up to a maximum of five years, depending on performance, until the age of 65.
Work location NIMS Sengen Site (Tsukuba city, Ibaraki)
Work hours Seven hours per day, five days a week at the NIMS Sengen campus, in Tsukuba.
Holiday Saturdays, Sundays and Japanese National Holidays
Salary & conditions According to NIMS payment policy.

  1. Curriculum vitae, including a recent photograph.
  2. Ten representative publications authored by the applicant.
  3. Write a proposal for a special Focus Issue of STAM. There are not any restrictions about the style, format or total length of this proposal.

  5. Two signed letters of recommendation including contact details.
