Guest researcher invitation program by NIMS targets a globally open research institute
The Open Research Institute Program is an original program of NIMS from 2008 for inviting overseas researchers. Targeting an institute that is open to the world, the program offers various opportunities for excellent researchers in the global arena.
Purpose of the program

As a core institute that leads innovative research projects in the field of material science, NIMS considers it important to nurture extensive relationships with a global community of researchers by offering them many opportunities to visit NIMS, where collaborations and opinion exchanges among competent researchers generate synergic stimuli. For this purpose, various programs have been implemented including ICYS. The Open Research Institute Program is one of the programs based on this concept. Further promotion of international exchanges and vitalization of research activities in NIMS thanks to synergic effects are intended by inviting overseas researchers through this program.
The program's mechanism
The program is comprised of the following three systems.
NIMS Invitation Program
NIMS Invitation Program is a new program as a revised version of the previous "International Partnership Incentive System". Through this modification, the system has been made more flexible and it can be used for inviting researchers of a higher level (for instance, a president of an overseas research institute).
International Joint Graduate School Program
In this program, overseas doctorial students from globally renowned graduate schools are accepted as NIMS visiting scientist (trainee) and undergo training by NIMS researchers on research.
NIMS Internship Program
NIMS Intership Program aims to guide domestic and overseas undergraduate students and graduate students to pursue top level researchers in materials science and at the same time aims to publicize NIMS activities and opportunities in particular the NIMS doctoral program in Materials Science and Engineering.
Achievement
Total of 644 researchers were invited
By the end of March 2011, a total of 644 researchers were invited by those 3 programs. A breakdown of invited researchers is shown in the graph. Through this program, further promotion of international exchanges and vitalization of research activities has spread over the whole NIMS. Along with the increase of overseas researchers, NIMS has been developing the international research environment, such as providing administrative and research support with bilingual, holding an orientation & lab. tour and establishment of ICYS International Support Desk and Graduate Program Office(Graduate Program Section, Academic Collaboration Office succeeded the work of GPO from April 2011) .
