Study of FePt based thin films for Perpendicular Magnetic Recording Media
A. Perumal
Equi-atomic FePt thin films with tetragonal phase and L10 ordering has been
known to be a promising candidate for ultrahigh density perpendicular
magnetic recording media due to its large magnetocrystalline anisotropy.
Over a decade, several attempts have been made to prepare the FePt thin
films under various environmental conditions to understand the room
temperature structure - property correlation and to extend them for
practical applications.
In this presentation, I would be summarizing our previous research works and
results on FePt based thin films. At first, the results on FePt:C system
prepared by co-sputtering technique directly on MgO substrate held at
different substrate temperatures would be presented. Subsequently, the
results on FePt:MgO system, prepared in multilayer form in room temperature
followed by post annealing at different temperatures, would be discussed.
Then, I present the results on FePt:MgO granular structure prepared on
Fe-Ta-C soft underlayer. Finally, I would discuss the results on reducing
ordering temperature of FePt system with the strain induced phase transition
along with problems experienced on further advances.
