The University of Tsukuba is one of the leading research universities in Japan, a member of RU-11 University Association. Two of three group leaders in the magnetic materials unit have professorship at the Graduate School of Pure and Applied Sciences, the University of Tsukuba, and the unit accepts graduate students for the Doctoral Program in Materials Science and Engineering, which is operated jointly by NIMS and the University of Tsukuba. Students can start from a master course (typically two years) or a Ph.D. course (typically three years after completion of a M.S. degree). NIMS Junior Research Assistantship will be awarded to all admitted graduate students. The education and research in the unit are conducted in English. The program offers courses in English, so no Japanese language ability is required. For general application procedure, see how to apply.

Call for Applications to the Graduate Program for AY2013

The applications to the graduate program for academic year 2013 will be called in May. The next entrace examination is to be held in August 21, 2012. Students who are expecting a BS degree or a MS (or its equivalent) degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Applied Physcs, Physics or Solid State Chemistry by the end of March or July 2013 are eligible to apply for AY2013, the starting dates of which are April or August 2013. Students with a BS degree must enroll to the two years master course before getting into the Ph.D. course. The starting date for the MS course for international students is August 2013 only. The students with a MS degree can apply for the Ph.D. program (3 years course) directly for the starting dates of April or August 2013.

No Japanese speaking ability is required, but candidates must have a good command of English. All applicants must submit either official TOEFL or TOEIC score to the admission office to prove their English ability (note that Institutional TOEFL or TOEIC score reports are not acceptable). Accepted students will be awarded the NIMS Junior Research Assistantship which will cover the tuition and stipend for their two year master course and three year Ph.D. course in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Tsukuba. The students who are interested in the following three areas are welcome to apply. MS course students must take classes at the University of Tsukuba, and the English program for international students will start from August 2009. Therefore, the international students with a BS degree are also encouraged to apply to the MS course.

Magnetic materials and spintronics (Prof. K. Hono)
Development of materials for magnetic recording media and read sensors of ultrahigh density hard disk drives. Improvement of hard and soft magnetic materials for energy and environmental conservations. Nanostructure characterization for understanding the structure-property relationships of the magnetic and spintronics materials and devices.

Development of spintronic devices (Prof. S. Mitani)
Development of spintronic devices and magnetic nanostructures for new phenomena and functionalities in magnetics and electronics. The underlying physics on spin-dependent transport and magnetization dynamics is also studied. Background in solid state physics or materials science is required.

Nanostructure characterization by 3DAP and TEM (Prof. K. Hono)
Students who are interested in the methodology of three-dimensional atom probe (3DAP) as well as analytical work with electron microscopy can dedicate in nanostructure characterization of various materials to become professional in nanoanalysis. Those who select this subject are expected to work with the instrumentation of laser-assisted atom probe and its applications to the characterization of all ranges of materials including nanostructured metals, magnetic materials, spintronics devices, semiconductors, functional ceramics and their devices. At the same time, they will learn advanced analytical TEM techniques such as high resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy filtered imaging and aberration corrected STEM/HAADF.

For application, apply to the NIMS Junior Research Assistantship first following the instruction in the program home page or directly go to the application guide for the NIMS Junior Research Assistantship for AY2013.

Post Doc Positions

No opening now.

If you wish to join our group as a post doctoral fellow or for a sabbatical stay, apply to the JSPS Fellowship. This fellowship will grant you a round trip ticket and a living allowance to let you stay in our institute for as long as 24 months. Various fringe benefits will be offered to the recipients of the fellowship. However, since this fellowship is rather competitive, excellent publication record is essential for successful application. We are keen to accept motivated young scientists who are interested in the subject relevant to the current research activities in the magnetic materials center.
NIMS Open Research Institute

NIMS Open Research Institute is a new invitation program that has been established to facilitate the visit of researchers and students from all over the world to carry out collaborative researches with the members of NIMS. All ranges of scientists including academic staff members, coorporate researchers, scientists in national labs, post docs, graduate and undergraduate students are qualified to apply. The maximum duration of stay is one year with a full financial support from NIMS covering economy class round trip air fare, accomodation in Ninomiya House and daily allowance.
