From Narita Airport

Airport Limousine bound for Tsukuba Center and Tsuchiura:

The easiest way to get to Tsukuba is to take the Airport Limousine Bus. It takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes between the airport and Tuskuba Center, with nine services per day. All buses from Narita Airport can be taken without reservations. Tickets can be purchased at the KEISEI Counter in front of the exit from the customs on the arrival lobby of the airport. A one-way ticket costs 2,540 JPY for adults.From Tsukuba to the airport, ticket must be reserved at least 3 days before your departure date. You can, however, take the bus without reservation if seats are available.

In case you miss the final bus from Narita, take Narita Express to Tokyo and get the highway express bus to Tsukuba from Yaesu South Exiit of JR tokyo Station.

From Haneda Airport to Tsukuba Center

Haneda Airport is an airport in Tokyo for most of domestic flights. Direct bus services are available between Haneda Airport and Tsukuba Center.

From Tokyo

Highway bus to Tsukuba Center:
Take a highway express bus to Tsukuba Center from the bus terminal at Yaesu South Exit of JR Tokyo Station. Bus leaves every 20 min. Reservation is not necessary. Buy ticket from a vending machine or at the ticket office. When the bus approaches Tsukuba area, it will stop Shimo-hirooka, Namiki Ohashi, Namiki Ni-chome, Namiki-ichome, and Sengen-ichome. Those who are visiting the Magnet Materials Center,, get off the bus at the fifth stop, Sengen Ichome. The traveling time is approximately 70 min, and the bus fare is 1,150 JPY. There will be English announcement in the bus.
After getting off the bus station, NIMS is just left hand side toward the traveling direction of the bus. To the main gate, keep walking to the traveling direction of the bus, then turn left at the traffic signal, and keep walking for about 5 min. Then, you will reach the main gate of the institute.

Tsukuba Express
Tsukuba Express Railway connects Akihabara and Tsukuba in 45 min by rapid train. Go to Akihabara JR station either by Yamanote Line, Chuo Line, and Sobu Line and follow the sign of Tsukuba Express. From Tokyo JR station, take either Yamanote Line or Keihin Tohoku Line toward Uneno. Two stations from Tokyo is Akihabara Station. Then follow the sign of "Tsukuba Express". The station is underground. Rapid train leaves from Akiharbara for Tsukuba every 15 min. Fare 1150 JPY. Fore more details, download Tsukuba Express pdf file.

When you arrive Tsukuba station, take the escalator at exit A3. When you go out from underground, take the stairs to a pedestrian bridge. Turn left at the end of the stairs and keep walking straight for 15 min. Then you will arrive NIMS. You can also take a taxi from Tsukuba Center, fare approximately 640 JPY.

In general, Japanese people are very willing to help visitors from foreign countires. So if you are not sure about your direction, ask help to peoplf around you. Those who will be visiting Magnetic Materials Center from overseas, accomodations will be booked either in Okura Frontier Hotel Tsukuba or Okura Frontier Hotel Tsukuba Epocal. The former is in the Tsukuba Center and the later is 5 min walk from Tsukuba Center. Long term visitors to the Magnetic Materials Center will be booked in Ninomiya House.
