If the prospective supervisor shows his/her interest in supervising the candidate, submit application to the admission office of the University of Tsukuba during the application period. The application period is usually July and February. See the program home page..
Take entrance examination at the University of Tsukuba in August or February. The examination is comprised of two parts: written exam of English and oral examination. Oral examination is a presentation of applicant's research work for his/her M.S. degree for 15 min followed by question and answer on the presentation as well as the interview regarding the prospective studies for a Ph.D. degree. The applicants can submit TOEFL or TOEIC score as proof of English proficiency. No financial support will be provided to the applicant's travel expense.
The examination result will be informed form the prospective supervisor. Successful applicants start from either September or April. Acceptance to the Doctoral Program in Materials Science and Engineering indicates the provision of the NIMS Junior Research Associateship. However, the applicants must pay for the admission fee and tuition to the university. The stipend paid for the Research Associateship should be enough to cover these fees. In many cases, half of the tuition may be exempted by the university through application.
Typical period for completing a Ph.D. degree is three years after completion of a master degree. NIMS Junior Research Associateship will be awarded for three years after annual research evaluation. Unless the students show excellence in study and research, the Research Associateship may be terminated before completion of the three year course. Students can apply to a master course as well, but since classes are given in Japanese, proficiency in Japanese is required for the master course.
