Dr. TANUMA Shigeo: Director General, Materials Analysis Station
MESSAGE
Materials analysis techniques and information are essential for research and development of new materials, and are the basis of materials characterization. Science and Technologies Basic Plan endorsed by the Cabinet of Japan also requires international collaborations for promoting the construction of intellectual infrastructure and international standardization in science and technologies. Materials characterization is the core of the solution to these requirements. Research on materials characterization from a long-term and systematic point of view is required.
Thus, Materials Analysis Station (MAS) was established on April 1, 2002 as one of the research units in National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS). MAS consists of 4 groups, Inorganic Chemical Analysis Group, Surface Analysis Group, Microanalysis Group and X-ray Diffraction Group, and has 12 researchers and 6 stuffs in fiscal 2002.
At MAS, we provide technical support for materials analysis and supply analysis information on various kinds of materials to all researchers in NIMS. We also develop new analysis methods with higher reliability and higher sensitivity, and carry out research on materials analysis with an aim for international standardization of analysis methods.
MISSION
To Provide Materials Analysis Data
Development of New Analysis Methods
To Study With an Aim for Global Standardization
We aim to establish a basis for R & D of new materials and supply integrated information on materials analysis techniques.
