Magnetic domain evolution in Nd–Fe–B:Cu sintered magnet visualized by scanning hard X-ray microprobe

Abstract

The formation and development of the magnetic domain structures of an Nd2Fe14B sintered magnet doped with 0.1% Cu are studied during the demagnetization process. A scanning hard X-ray microprobe with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Nd L2 edge is applied to investigate the evolution of magnetic domains with the applied magnetic field on a fractured surface. Reversed magnetic domains are initially formed in the Nd–Fe–B main phase grains beside the Cu-abundant regions that superposes on an Nd-rich phase. This characteristic formation of initial domains is reproducibly observed throughout several demagnetization cycles after the magnetization becomes saturated, suggesting the presence of specific nucleation sites that trigger the magnetization reversal.
