The International Symposium on Advanced Physical Fields (APF) has been annually held as part of the research project run by Nanomaterials Laboratory (NML) and sponsored by the Center-of-Excellence (COE) Development Program of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT). The project is now on the second stage that started in 2000 aiming at the development of novel quantum-effect devices based on nano-scale structures. The APF8 in 2003, the eighth of a series of meetings will focus on "Advanced Materials for Quantum Computing". Quantum computing, which is located on the crossing point of quantum physics and information science, is also a promising frontier where varied materials and nano-structures with novel quantum effects are expected to emerge. We attempt to explore features required for nano-scale materials and structures and their realization from a viewpoint of materials science.Topics to Be Considered
All topics related to quantum computing are welcome. Examples are; new scheme of quantum computing, novel physics of quantum entanglement, quantum computing with cavity QED, spin qubits and NMR quantum computing, all-optical quantum gates, qubits and quantum gates with quantum dots, quantum computing based on spintronics, Josephson qubits, quantum imaging, physics of decoherence.
APF8 will be held at the main building of National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS). It is located in the central part of Tsukuba city and within a walking distance from the bus terminal, Tsukuba Center. There are limousine bus lines from Narita and Haneda airports and Tokyo station of Japan Railway (JR).

| Paper submission, Guide for Authors | January 15 |
To submit an Abstract Those who would like to present a paper at APF8 should submit an abstract on-line by December 13 (Registration deadline is extended to January 6, 2003). The abstract should include author's name, affiliation, title of the paper, and 3 to 4 lines of a short abstract. Abstract format is attached to a registration form.
To submit a Technical Digest
Technical digest booklet will be distributed to attendees at the beginning of the meeting. Authors are requested to submit a 1 to 2 pages of the summary of their paper in either pdf or word format on-line by December 20. The summary should include the title of the paper, author's name(s), affiliation, address, e-mail address of corresponding author, main text, figures and tables if any, and references.
Full paper
Proceedings of the symposium is planned to be published in a special edition of Superlattice and Microstructures. Authors are encouraged to submit a full paper.
All participants are requested to register in advance. Registration is free of charge. Please fill in the Registration Form and submit it to the APF8 Secretariat by December 13.(Registration deadline is extended to January 6, 2003.) Students can also be admitted to participate on the symposium. If any student has an interest, please contact the secretariat.
Blocks of rooms in nearby hotels (Okura Frontier Hotel Tsukuba and Hotel Grand Shinonome) are reserved at discount rates by the Organizing Committee. Both of them are located within a walking distance from the conference site. The discount rates apply to stays from January 14 to 17. Because the number of the rooms is limited, they will be assigned to those who send the Reservation Form earlier. Those who need a hotel reservation should submint a hotel reservation form on-line. Hotel reservation is available by December 31.Room Charge
